KUALA LUMPUR: There will be at least two neurosurgeons in each state to provide core neurosurgical works when the Government expands resident services in the discipline, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
Currently, he said, eight states that still did not have resident neurosurgical services were Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Malacca.
“We are now training 26 students to become neurosurgeons and once they graduate, we will be able to have at least two neurosurgeons in all these states,” he told reporters after opening the 8th Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons and 1st Asian Neurosurgical Nursing Congress here yesterday.
Liow said there were currently 74 neurosurgeons in the country with only 45 of them in the public sector.
“There is an acute shortage, especially in the east coast, northern region of the peninsula and East Malaysia.
“However, this is still a vast improvement as in 2004 there were only 36 neurosurgeons in the country,” he said.
However, he did not reveal the number of neurosurgeons needed based on the country’s population.
Liow said a comprehensive local training programme in collaboration with international faculties, which was established in 2001, had increased the number of trained neurosurgeons in the country since 2005.
He said the ministry also hoped to strengthen its six regional centres at Johor Baru, Kuala Lumpur, Sungai Buloh, Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu with at least four neurosurgeons each to provide more advanced sub-speciality neurosurgical works.

Boeing 787 fire caused by misplaced tool -paper
CHICAGO (Reuters) - The fire on a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner test flight two weeks ago resulted from a short circuit caused by a tool mistakenly left in an electrical equipment cabinet on the plane, according to French newspaper La Tribune.
In an article on Monday, the paper said that while the misplaced tool was the cause of the fire, engineers are trying to find a way to prevent it from happening again. La Tribune attributed the information to "industry sources."
A Boeing spokeswoman declined to comment on the accuracy of the report, saying the investigation is ongoing.
"The investigation is not complete. Anything indicating cause or next steps is just speculation at this point," she said.
The French report said contractor Hamilton Sundstrand, a unit of United Technologies that provides electrical components, was likely one of several manufacturers involved.
Hamilton Sundstrand said it was "offering full support of the investigation and assisting Boeing."
Boeing, the world's second-largest plane-maker after Airbus, halted test flights on the long-delayed 787 Dreamliner following the Nov. 9 fire, which caused an emergency landing of the plane in Laredo, Texas.
The company has not said whether the fire would affect its plans to make first delivery of the light-weight, carbon-composite plane to the first customer in the first quarter of 2011.
The delivery is already nearly three years behind schedule. Some aviation experts believe there could be another delay of a few months to a few years.
"We think it is probably a positive if the source of the fire can be traced to an errant tool, rather than a system design issue," said Robert Stallard, analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said in a research note.
Shares of Boeing, a Dow component, have fallen more than 7 percent since Nov. 9 and closed up 44 cents at $64.03 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Emma Watson Doesn't Understand the 'Male Gender'

"When I was on the set with Daniel [Radcliffe] and Rupert [Grint], it was normally me who went to the guys with the questions about guys because I don't pretend to understand the male gender," Watson tells Parade.com.
"I'm just like, 'What is going on here? What should I be doing? I don't understand,' " the actress, 20, says. "So they've helped me out a bit and been like my protective big brothers."
While the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I star is currently single, she admits to being "fiercely loyal," much like her character Hermione Granger.
"I really empathize with people and I can't help but take care of them and protect them, sometimes in a kind of unhealthy way," says Watson, 20. "I'm definitely a caretaker. I have to really pull myself back on the reins and say, 'Put yourself first. Love yourself first.'"
Just because she's said to be worth $32 million doesn't mean Watson hasn’t struggled with self-doubt.

"I feel so lucky. We have these wonderful seamstresses who are creating beautiful dresses that are obviously replicas of real things [Kennedy] wore," Holmes told Us of the project, airing in early 2011. "Her great style was both appropriate for every event that she went to and also classic, and also things that were wearable. I feel really lucky to be playing her."

Ryan Reynolds Is 'Sexiest Man Alive'
Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds was named the sexiest man alive Wednesday by People Magazine, which said the 34-year-old has "an eight-pack of abs that makes millions swoon."
His picture will grace the cover of the next issue of People, which will hit newsstands today (Friday).
Reynolds is the 25th holder of the title, following in the footsteps of Australian actor Hugh Jackman, Ireland's Pierce Brosnan, Scotsman Sean Connery, two-time winners Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and George Clooney, and many more including actor Mel Gibson.
Born 23 October 1976 in Vancouver, Reynolds has played a vampire hunter in Blade: Trinity, a man who mentally melts down in the 2005 remake of The Amityville Horror, and was Sandra Bullock's faux fiance in The Proposal.
He made his acting debut as a teen on Canadian television in a series called Hillside, which aired on the Nickelodeon children's network. His picture will grace the cover of the next issue of People, which will hit newsstands today (Friday).
Reynolds is married to US actress Scarlett Johansson -- who was named the sexiest woman alive by Esquire Magazine in 2006.

No Muppet Role For 'Glee' Star
Glee star Jane Lynch says she is not attached to Disney's upcoming new Muppets movie, despite media reports that she would be taking part.
The Emmy-winning actress told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's 39th annual gala fund-raiser that she has not been approached to participate in the project being written by How I Met Your Mother's Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller (Yes Man).
"I'm not doing the Muppets movie," Lynch said. "They haven't asked me. I would do it if they asked me."
Lynch was on hand to pick up the Rand Schrader Distinguished Achievement Award, the Center's highest individual honor, which was presented to her by Glee co-star Matthew Morrison and writer-director-creator Ryan Murphy.

Depp To Star In Burton's Vamp Movie
After collaborating on several films, from 1990's Edward Scissorhands to this year's blockbuster Alice In Wonderland, director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp will recreate the vampire tale of Dark Shadows, set to begin production in April 2011.
Based on the popular daytime television soap opera from the 1960s, Dark Shadows follows vampire Barnabas Collins, to be portrayed by Depp, and assorted witches, werewolves and ghosts. After this gothic story had been postponed for various projects, the new shoot date was reported by the Hollywood blog Deadline.
The script is by Pride And Prejudice and Zombies novelist Seth Grahame-Smith and John August, who wrote the Big Fish screenplay for Burton.
Another long-time collaborator with Burton, Danny Elfman, will compose the musical score.
Currently in production with Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Depp will next be seen in The Tourist with Angelina Jolie opening 10 December. Other films coming up are Rango, an animated film by Gore Verbinski due in theaters March 2011, and The Rum Diary based on a Hunter S. Thompson story.
Other projects Depp has on his schedule that may require juggling are Kathryn Bigelow's Triple Frontier and Snow White And The Huntsman.
Burton is also working on a feature-length animated film, Frankenweenie, based on his short film and planned for release in March 2012.

If this movie were to leak out to outer space, we'd practically be inviting alien lifeforms to take over – seeing how easy it is to destroy planet Earth.
The story is hardly original, and the plot was barely there. What made previous alien invasion blockbuster Independence Day, a blockbuster, was that the storyline followed a group of intelligent and influential human beings – the President of United States, genius scientists and a Marine captain. In Skyline instead, the story line follows a bunch of witless idiots hiding out in an apartment as the aliens attack.
The movie starts off with a group of friends, passed out after a late night of partying, awakening to a bright blue light outside their windows. Finding that they cannot drag their eyes away from the beautiful blue lights, one of them gets sucked straight out into the skies, where the source of lights are from. A heroic attempt to find out what is happening outside, friends Jarrod and Terry go up to the roof to see countless alien lifeforms attacking the city.
I'd have to say Skyline is a boy's movie. Which boy wouldn't be exhilarated by the fact that you get a first-hand view of a cool alien invasion from your penthouse window? The effects are in fact very impressive. The spaceships were frightfully cool, and the vein popping effects looked disgustingly real. The aliens were so terrifying and realistic – the majestic alien invasion effects can almost give War Of The Worlds a run for their money.
However, the disappointment was in the ridiculous cast. For goodness sakes, I wouldn't expect more than a B-grade slasher film from comedic actor Donald Faison of Scrubs and Brittany Daniel, a frequent face from the Wayans Brothers movies.
To make matters worse, the main characters were played by newbies Eric Balfour and Scottie Thompson, who must have skipped a whole lot of acting classes. The exaggerated expressions and the over dramatized acting (Yes, too dramatic even for an alien invasion!) actually brought out hysterical giggles from cinema audiences. I don't think the directors, brothers Colin and Greg Strause intended for Skyline to be comedic, but believe me, you'll find yourself laughing more than you find yourself worrying about the safety of humankind.
The only savior of the show was seasoned actor David Zayas, known from the TV series Dexter. Ever the action hero, Zayas brought the most charisma on screen. It was a pity they did not choose to cast him as the main lead. If it weren't for him, I'd be rooting for the aliens to finish them humans off - faster!
