Anwar cannot liken himself to Suu Kyi, says writer

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should not equate himself with Myanmar's democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi, said a writer of an American right-wing website.

Rachel Motte, writing in the New Ledger, an American web publication that publishes the right-of-centre opinions, said the equation should not have been made as Anwar's personal case was different from that of Suu Kyi's.

In addition, Malaysia's political landscape had little in common with Myanmar's, she said.

"If anyone has suffered for the cause of democracy, Suu Kyi has ... not Anwar Ibrahim, who has enjoyed the benefits of a trial, a team of lawyers, access to local, national and international media outlets, his own political party and the freedom to travel the globe.

"Anwar is no Aung San Suu Kyi. Indeed, his actions as the co-founder of a front organisation for the Global Muslim Brotherhood indicated that he is in fact opposed to the democratic ideals she has sacrificed so much for," Motte wrote.

The writer claimed that Anwar was using Suu Kyi's recent release to attract attention to his own political problems when speaking on social justice and democracy in Sydney, Australia, early this week. - Bernama
